Policy/Advocacy

This page contains resources for anyone interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics advocacy and policy. I was introduced to many of these resources when I attended the Catalyzing Advocacy in Science and Engineering (CASE) Workshop in 2021, which is organized by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

The AAAS has many opportunities and resources for students at any point in their education to learn about science policy and advocacy.

Resources for students and early career researchers can be found here.

They have consolidated educational resources, workshop presentations, and other information regarding the work they do at the AAAS there. Additionally, the AAAS sponsors students and early career researchers in their various policy-related fellowship programs.

Much of the work of the AAAS is at the federal policy level. See below for more local networks and opportunities.

The American Mathematical Society (AMS) Office of Government Relations works with the AAAS and other organizations to advocate for the advancement of policy initiatives that are of interest to pure and applied mathematicians. Their resources and fellowship opportunities can be found here.

In particular, the AMS sponsors two graduate students to attend the CASE Workshop.

Networks for Science Policy and Advocacy

Here are a few networks and organizations that work in this world at all levels: federal, state, and local. These organizations often host online social and informational events for students and scientists interested in learning about current policy initiatives.

National Science Policy Network (NSPN)

Engaging Scientists and Engineers in Policy (ESEP)

Local Science Engagement Network (LSEN)
